Utilizing an old rabbit/armadillo hole?

kellywood23 May 27, 2009 01:47 PM

I am wanting to build a perm. outdoor enclosure so my boxies can stay outside all year round. I have an area, under a very large crapmyrtel bush where an old rabbit/armadillo hole is. Would it be possible for the boxies to use this hole for hiding/hibernation? The hole is situated on a slight hill so no water or anything can get in it. I can also cover part of the hole from the enclosure to prevent water also.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Kelly

The first thing that comes to my mind is that your boxies could escape through a potential series of tunnels that are connected to this hole.

I can't say for sure, without seeing pictures, but that would be my fear.

I have thought about that, but after searching for quite some time, I do not think there is any other holes. I believe this is a rabbit hole, based on the location, but I do not think there is an exit.

If there was no way out other than the in, would this be a good idea?

I remember years ago, I had a boxie pen in my back yard and they made there den under a huge boulder. I was real neat to see them come out every morning from under the rock. That is what gave me the idea of using the old rabbit home.

Just a thought.

Thanks again,

Kelly

they should make their own hibernation holes....but if you think it looks cool why not?

There is probably an exit somewhere....one solution would be to dig around in about a 4' radius around the opening and block any tunnels that go further than that.

Now that is something I can do, but did not think about. Thank you! I believe you solved my problem.

Hopefully, the boxies will like it when I am done.

Thanks again,

Kelly

You're welcome!

I dig my own burrows every fall for my boxies. I dig 2 or 3 tunnels gradually sloping down to a depth of 1.5 feet and as long as my arm will reach! Seems to satisfy them.
