swelling near vent

WolfenWarrior May 27, 2009 02:02 PM

My female sunglow motley laid 18 perfect eggs for me about a month ago, and seemed fine. However, she has been refusing food since and I think she laid a slug (hard to identify eggish blob) about a week ago. Now she has a small swelling on her belly just before her vent, like she might have another. She also has brown crusty scales around her vent and her vent itself looks a little swollen. I tried washing the area, and the crustiness looks to be the scales themselves. Is this serious? I have a tendency to overreact to little things, but she's my best producer and dont want to risk anything. I am also calling my vet, but I just moved and have never been to this vet before.

sounds like eggbinding, with the vent irritated by the female trying to get the egg out. I had something similar last year. Best of luck with the new vet

Just got back from the new vet. Ruled out egg binding, but there is a bad infection. He wasnt sure where the infection was coming from, but there was a lot of puss and we're hoping it's not an abcess in her reproductive tract. Most of the swelling seems like it was from a build up of gooey puss. Poor girl. Now she'll be getting an antibiotic injection every three days. I hope it clears up, I really like this girl!

Did you get any popped eggs? She may have a burst egg that caused the infection.
How did he rule out egg binding? Radiographs? Palpation? Probe?
Did he remove any of the pus to decrease the swelling?

She passed something that may have been a popped egg, but it's uncertain. The vet was considering that as a strong possibility. He palpated her very thoroughly, and she is rather thin at the moment, so it should be relatively easy to tell if she had an egg left. We decided not to do a radiograph at this point. He was able to remove a large amount of puss, and oh man was it disgusting. He looked at some of it under the microscope and it was just swarming with bacteria. She seems to be feeling a little better today, probably from the decreased swelling.

No, it's a different one called Fortaz. I've never heard of it before, but he said he'd had luck with it with corns before and that it had fewer side effects than some others.
