Sav Enclosure Addition

jeffharding May 28, 2009 11:03 AM

Currently have an 8x3x2 enclosure for the big guy. Mostly a galvanized steel trough with a plexi top:

Adding a top section to fit perfectly in the shed, where the current enclosure resides:

Building the top section in pieces (2 sides, front, back, and two roof pieces). Coating them with green ReptiShield.

Front Piece will be all plexi on a wood frame:

The front has a section for sliding glass windows. Going to install two 30x30 7/8 pieces of tempered safety glass on window track:

The back will be all plywood with repti-shield. I ran out of shield with about 2 sqft to go, unfortunately. Probably going to have to use regular paint:

End result should look something like this:

THinking about adding a mister setup to spray and keep humidity. This cage will be sealed and may install 2 vents in the bottom of the sides or back.

I cut down a pine tree in my front yard (was going to do it anyway), so now I have tons of cool logs and branches (once they dry out) to use in the cage. The substrate is decomposed granite and top soil mix.

Please let me know your comments, suggestions, questions and I will keep posting my progress!

Is that a screen door on top. That is a great idea.

Here are some pictures of the cage complete.

If you look closely, you can see his burrow. He's been hiding out in there since I reintroduced him to the cage. Probably a little stressed.

The branches and lighting are temporary. I have a perfect basking and climbing log for the cage, but it is pine and still drying out, about 800 lbs right now!

How do you like the repti shield? And how long did it take to receive it? thanks in advance.

The RS went on the wood very easily wiht hardly any fumes. COvered well. I wound up being about 2 sq ft short, but went to home depot and got them to match the color and I filled it in from there. It took me about 3 weeks to get it, but the reason was because it is flammable, they have to have someone certified for that kindo f stuff ship it and he was on vacation. Woudl have liked to get a response to my emails and calls quickier, but I am satisfied with the product. It really protects the wood.

What kind of wood and glass did you use for the enclosure?

jeffharding Jul 06, 2009 06:57 PM

The wood is 2x4s and plywood, with the inside painted with Reptishield. THe glass for the doors is 1/4" laminated safety glass and the rest of the front is acrylic.
