how vital is it...

...to check on the eggs? I got my first clutch of eggs ever and I'm very excited but how often are you supposed to open the incubator and check them? Is it neccesary to get fresh air in there all the time or can they sit the entire time without being disturbed. And what about mom? When can I feed her again?
Thanks very much!

...depends on how they are setup/ box type and if there are air holes and all....tell us more......but you don't have to bug them all the time....

as for mom, you can feed her a couple seconds after she is done laying.....usually they won't eat for a day ,maybe more....they will strike alot and bite...mine won't usually eat normally,so I kick start them with a gerbil, my friends have been pigging out on frozen thawed rats right away ....

they are in a plastic shoebox with no airholes but the lid is attached and hinged and doesnt make a tight seal so air can get in.
thanks

You might want to seal the box with saranwrap or press-n-seal before putting the lid on to avoid that air getting in you mentioned. I prefer to take the lid off (and the sealing wrap) once a week to give the eggs fresh air and wipe off any condensation off the walls and especially off the eggs if they get dripped on while doing this process. Just my two cents.

Forgot to mention about Mom. It's very important to thoroughly clean her enclosure to remove any scent of the eggs. She most likely won't eat until that's done.

As Joyhe said, it depends on your setup-with mine I probably don't need to check them at all, but I do so every couple of weeks or so, just in case an egg has gone bad and needs to be removed.

I try to get those females eating as soon as possible after laying-most within a week. I figure a female needs 30 or more decent meals before her next breeding season, so the sooner she eats, the better.
