Double clutch?

dave15run May 29, 2009 10:16 AM

I have read classifieds that say the snake they have for sale has not been double clutched. I have also read posts in this forum that say that snakes are double clutched. Is the practice of double clutching bad for the snake. I was going to double clutch my best breeder this year. Let me know what you think.

Double-clutching is not generally nor necessarily delterious to a female's health, but it CAN be. A lot of snakes will double clutch regardless of what you do-better to throw a male in and get a fertile clutch than end up with slugs-especially since infertile ova are more difficult to pass, and may lead to an eggbinding situation.

That said, if a female is at ALL skinny after the first clutch, I try to discourage a second clutch by feeding rather sparingly at first, and of course not throwing in a male at any time.
