Some of my females look even fatter when they ovulate as opposed to when they're gravid and about to lay. I'd like to think that when they're plump and breeding they're working around the ovulation...and since I am never sure of what is going on I constantly introduce the male even after multiple copulations .... even if the female is bloated like a sausage.
I understand concerns over a smaller male...but in this case it may have been to your advantage to house them together right out of cooling.
I am confused as usual over here with who is doing what and some snakes I thought were about to lay went opaque again...but like I mentioned the males are with them a lot. If these snakes of yours were mine...I'd keep that male in with her a lot...and even she slugs out I'd have him back in within a few days to try for better timing on a possible second clutch.
One more thing... if this does not work out for this pair again... I'd put the female on a diet. Maybe she will give a good clutch after dropping some weight. I have not had to try this but a few times... but you just can not know how much body fat is underneath those scales...and fat can make things go wrong.
Good luck bud! You don't have another male to try???
