re: gravid or not? (lsd) pics

raisnok May 29, 2009 09:51 PM

these pics arent the best, my good camera has an issue.
i will have it back next week, then i will get better pics after she has eaten as well, if she will.
i am assuming shes probably not gravid, because the lump doesnt seem that apparent any longer, i have added 2 pics with yellow marks to show you where she lumps out at after feeding.
could the "lumps" be slugs?
by the way thanks for your advice with this.

Has possibly slugs /unfertilized look at this point
depends on when it last ate also
Definitely doesn't have that nice full flat tire look
If its early she could still fill out a bit
If anything,slugs That's my guess.

this was my first attempt at breeding boas.

i had a feeling that something wasnt quiet right but i was sure, then today i was thinking i wonder if it could be slugs.

Don't give up on her you never know, they can fool us.
Monitor her body temps if she is pretty steady at
least 87*-88* she could and may have viable babies.

OK,

Since your male hasn't bred her since late Nov....

This is my best guess.....

The swelling was in the right place for an ovulation, but how long did it take for it to go down?? An ovualtion that has some good size to it, mught take 48 hours to go down. Sometimes a female will still have that "chubby" look to her tail after an ovulation. Since there was a swelling, even though it was after a small meal, you have to figure that there's a possibility of "something" being in there. The only way it could be babies is from retained sperm and that's not a common occurance. So.... prepare yourself for the possibility of her giving you a pile of slugs.

Watch for signs of a shed cycle. If she has a shed/POS, then count 15 weeks. If she doesn't shed,... count 18 weeks from that swelling. That should give you an accurate due date, "if" she's got something in there. You said May 7th was the swelling.. So, Sept 10th for a due date??

Continue to offer her food, until 8 weeks prior to that due date.

If your due date passes... and she's still not had anything... You might want to consider taking her to a vet. You should also watch to see if she's having any problems. If she is take her sooner.

BTW there's no way to know if that swelling was an ovulation or not. Since this was your first time breeding your boas, it can be hard to identify the swellings. Many things can go wrong when breeding boas. It's when things go right that makes it enjoyable.

in early i sept i put my male boa dagda in with my female vesta.
they mated.

he stopped the first week of nov.

she refused to eat nov, then again in dec.
she shed in dec.

then ate a small rat which left a lump.(from the photo you can tell a small rat really shouldnt do any thing)

jan she refused to eat.

march she ate a small rat(left another lump)
march 16 she shed.

april she refused to eat.

she does have a slight lump.

this month may 7 she ate a small rat had a huge lump this time.

the temp in the enclosure is 90 i catch her during the day going to the cooler side which is in the 80s.

im guessing shes gravid but i know i could be wrong aswell.

in everyones opinion is she gravid
please note the photo was taken before the breeding ever occured

the first swelling was in dec, may 7th she ate a small rat and it left a lump.
her last shed cycle was march 16, i estimated that the due date would be july 4.... but she is becoming darker so i see a shed cycle coming.

what i am seeing with her is different that what i have read as far as breeding, but a "friend" who has bred them has told me everything is going just as it should be.
please note this same friend wanted me to sell him the boa, so i kind have taken it that he has misled me a bit.
