safe substrate?

geckobabies May 30, 2009 12:20 AM

Hello,

I have a pair of albino hognose babies that are well started and growing fast. Right now they are being kept on newspaper for substrate.

However, they are very messy and it's hard to keep the cage clean. Is there another type of substrate that would be safe for them at this age/size? I'm always scared of them swallowing anything.

I tried to search this forum for this, but my searches kept bringing up everything but hognose substrate! Thanks for any help =)

I use aspen for most of my snakes, but have used potting soil too & it seemed to be ok.

Has anybody used play sand or any other type of sand? Did it seem to work alright?

I use aspen, my business partner uses calci-sand. He has used it exclusively for the last several years with no trouble. For me it's too heavy for rack systems. See pic below.
Hope this helps
