what do you keep babies in?

54podge May 30, 2009 01:37 AM

all my snakes have their own aquariums from 10G to 55G, and I have one 10G sitting empty. I assume baby kings may be prone to eating one another, so I don't think I can keep them in there or can I? Are deli cups large enough? If so, how long before I need to find a more permanent home?

Reptile Basics makes a fantastic rack designed just for keeping neonate colubrids-works fantastic, I'd be lost without it! Ours has 600 slots!

Heheh, as a significantly smaller breeder, I use Gladware 13 cup/104 oz. containers, melt 1/4" holes around top for ventilation, a small water dish/hide, with about 2-3" of aspen bedding. For my purposes, it holds them tight and secure for a minimum of cost. They stay in these (kingsnakes and other small colubrids for their first year until ready for the rack. 3 for $5, $1 for the hide/bowl. I write date of clutch laid, hatch, meals and sheds on the lid, as well as i.d. #. But, when I get into the big boy arena, I plan on using a rack system like Brad uses.

Todd,

Where do you get those hide/bowls? Great idea. Also, do you put any part of the container on or near heat tape?

I get the bowls at Walmart in the pet section, or at Petsmart, can't remember which, I also use a flat double version of a similar bowl/hide. I don't use heat tape but you could, I have heard of using the lighted rope. It gets pretty warm during most of the year down in south Texas, I use a window a/c in the snake room. The room has an eastern and western window/sliding glass door which I block off during the heat of summer, but it lets in enough ambient light for a natural photo period. Hognose, mexicana and americana (lol)kings, milks, glossy, longnose, bulls and gophers, Texas rats, Baird's rats, corns and subocs all use these enclosures for their first year. They do not last long enough for the bull and larger rat snakes, but kings and milks do fine in them, some go most of their second year. I found some flat 12"X12"X3" Sterlite sweater boxes in a rack of six with folding snap lids at the local H.E.B.(store) and bought 5 racks before they discontinued them, I wish I had bought as many as I could find, they are the yearling to two year old racks here. Next comes a 10 gallon tank and if needed for larger snakes a large sweater type box. It is very humid down here, many ventilation holes are a must. It probably can be done better, but I am having success here and they are very easy to maintain.
