Nesting Season

StephF May 30, 2009 09:25 AM

It's that time of year again. One of the girls here tried to dig a nest last night but hit a root and gave up.
She'll try again tonight, in all likelihood.

Yup, she's at it again this evening...

Good luck with her. Do you just let them hatch naturally or do you incubate them yourself?

About how long between them breeding and her laying? And how long between her laying and them hatching?

I have had them hatch out naturally in my yard but always in the spring after wintering over. Now that they are all in an enclosure I'm hoping they will do their own thing naturally but I'm a little concerned.

Box turtles produce eggs on a seasonal basis that has nothing to do with when they mated. A female box turtle can lay fertile eggs 4 years after her last mating, since they have the capability to store sperm.

Incubation time has everything to do with temperature: warmer temps overall= shorter incubation period.

I used to incubate the eggs produced here artificially, as I was doing a head-starting project.

I'm so jealous! I can't breed my turtles in this state, blah! I did breed them in Texas so I know how adorable and fun they are to raise. Good luck on this years clutches. Tess
