KILLER-BEE-- GENETIC QUESTION?

sisco May 30, 2009 08:16 PM

We know that a killer-bee has a super pastel gene... what will the offspring be if bred to a normal? Thanks Mark Sisco

50% bumble bees and 50% pastels.

jaymiller242 May 30, 2009 10:27 PM

Wouldnt you also have like a 25% chance to get Supers Pastels? After all you have the Pastel gene coming from both sides.

killer bee x normal...

jaymiller242 May 31, 2009 07:06 AM

Ahhh.. Thanks for bringing that to simpltons attention..lol. I guess I either forgot about the Normal part or just put Normal Pastel in my head between reading it and writing about it..lol. I promise I didnt actually think you could make Super Pastels from a Killerbee and a Normal WC type..

Oh I didn't think that at all. I just assumed you forgot what the original breeding in question was, which is understandable.

RandyRemington May 31, 2009 08:45 AM

It may help to remember that there isn't "a super pastel gene" as such. Super pastel is the name we give to the apperence of an animal when both of it's genes at the pastel location have the pastel mutation. So a super pastel doesn't have a single super pastel gene, it has two pastel mutant genes (i.e. a super pastel is homozygous pastel). Each baby has a 50% chance as to which of a parent's two copies of each gene it gets but because both copies at the pastel locus are the same with a super pastel we know it will give a pastel mutant copy to all offspring.

"50% bumble bees and 50% pastels." (steelcityexotics)
This answers does make sense to me know that I think about it. Thanks for the mental nudge....mark sisco

You should also produce spiders from a killer bee X normal

A Killer bee is a super pastel so the whole clutch will be at least pastel, Any spiders that are produced from the clutch would then be bumble bees.

TerryHeuring Jun 02, 2009 04:37 PM

Ok,so all of the babies would be bees or pastels ?

steelcityexotics Jun 02, 2009 05:31 PM

You are correct

TerryHeuring Jun 02, 2009 08:33 PM

Thanks.
