Breeding??? I know rite!!!!

joefctr85 May 31, 2009 12:02 AM

Well everyone and their mother, gets on here and asks the same question so why not me, rite? I have a ball python, norm- and love it to death. I work in a local pet store and love it to death. I'm 18 and I wanna breed and sell. To share my passion and help others build that passion. I wanna breed both norms and morphs, this way i appeal to new keepers and also primed ones. So my questions are as follows.

1)Is selling both morphs and norms a good idea.
2)Which morph 1st.
3)Best way to sell(i.e. shows)
4)Partner? will i need one
5)Is it as fun as it sounds
6)anything else you mite have for me

Hey guys i know people are up here saying this stuff all the time, but really any help would be awesome. Thanks!!!!!

1)Is selling both morphs and norms a good idea.

There's nothing wrong with selling normals, but it's not easy to make money on them. You may be able to sell your normal off spring to the pet store you work at at a wholesale price, but as far as you yourself selling them, don't expect to get pet store prices for them. I've had the most luck moving normals at shows and through happening to know people who know people who want a baby ball python. Also, keep in mind that if you breed codominant morphs, you will end up with normal offspring, so you don't actually have to breed normal to normal to get normal babies.
2)Which morph 1st.

What do you like? The easiest to start out with would probably be a co dominant morph. The prices are generally more affordable, and it's a little easier for you to produce offspring, as you can breed them to normals and still produce morphs. My first visible morph was a pastel, but I had also aquired a pair of het albinos and het ghosts before that. Research the different morphs and pick something you really like.
3)Best way to sell(i.e. shows)

Shows and internet sales are probably the best ways. As far as internet sales, you can sell on the classified accounts and/ or make a website and market your product. If you really like doing face to face interactions, shows are hard to beat for the fun factor.
4)Partner? will i need one

NO.
5)Is it as fun as it sounds ?

Yes. It's also extremely stressful at times. Be ready to take the good with the bad, and it will stay fun. If it ever stops being fun, it's probably best to find a new hobby.
6)anything else you mite have for me

Research, research, research before you start, but don't ever assume you know everything-always be willing to learn new information. Try not to take yourself too seriously.

Here's my 2 cents...

1 Sell anything you don't want to keep normal or morph both are great. You will make very little money on normals I sell males for 10.00

2 Buy something you like. It would depend on your budget. I started off cheap and have sold and traded to get a better selection of morphs.
If you pic codom pick a morph that has a super such as a pastel ,cinny, mojave lets say instead spider.... just an example.. Make more combos later on as you build your collection,
or a codom het recessive like spider het ghost would be better than just a spider.............. just an example you will be able to do more with your animals.

3 Craigs list can work. I sell most my animals by word of mouth happy customers bring business and good word spreads just as well as bad in the herp world . Everybody wants to know where they got that killer new snake that there showing off.

4 Depends on what you want some people do.

5 Yes if you like to clean cages. CLEAN AND CLEAN AND CLEAN AND CLEAN CAGES. I have about 25 snakes boas, balls ,carpets and a green tree python it takes the better part of 3 hours to clean every ones cages.

6 If you are going to breed do it for the love of what you are doing. It can be hard on you Emotions at times when you loose an animal or have deformed hatchlings sometimes there are big not nice choices that will need to be made.

1)Is selling both morphs and norms a good idea.
breed alot of codoms-you get the norms also

2)Which morph 1st.
your money, your mind, your choice, they are all cheap now

3)Best way to sell(i.e. shows)
again, depends on where you live, some areas are really full

4)Partner? will I need one
GOD NO...never have one....

5)Is it as fun as it sounds
GOD NO,never has...wait...yes it was fun,is fun....LOL

6)anything else you mite have for me
