A couple of Va. Black rats

Steve_Craig May 31, 2009 09:25 AM

Here's a couple of Virginia black rats I found last weekend. Charles City, co. locality.
First one was on the edge of some stone steps.
Second Black rat was found probing around a huge pile of rocks.

Third photo was a.....not so fast my frind. Black Racer.
Good looking animal non the less.

You think there's some watersnakes in this area, LOL Thanks for looking. Steve

Now THAT, is a Black Rat! Gorgeous animal. Sure wish I could find one like that, under tin or in a deli cup, don't much matter, I want one.

Funny thing, seems you can buy just about any color/pattern "Black Rat" except for nice clean black...what's up with that?

It's a disease called commercialism. Everything it touches, turns into [bleep]. You can have something as vulgar and tasteless like a black eyed leucistic Ballpython or any other color mutant you could possibly want, anytime, anyware. If you manage to sell one of your vital organs, that is. But a nice 20$ solid Black Ratsnake? Nearly impossible.

I agree 100%!! And here in Va. you can't even get a permit to breed normals but,you can breed and sell albinos all day long! Jeff

Great Post, Steve.
The first in situ pic is enough to get adrenaline going.
I'd like to see more "in the field" Rat Snake pics on this forum.

Thanks for the pics! I enjoy wild black rat pics so I can compare how they look in my area.

Man, more nice black rats. Those are beauties. A couple years ago I was hiking in Shenandoah National Park and we came across an old homestead. There a beautiful approx. 5 foot long Black Rat on a stone slab outside a barn. It crawled into the wall so I didn't get a shot of it but iwas jet black. Had a prolapses hemipene too, btw.
