How many normal female breeders to start

euphuistical May 31, 2009 03:32 PM

I am just starting to get in to breeding. Only have one male at the moment, a pastel. I already have two breeding sized femalees, and a smaller spider and mojave female.

Would getting a couple more breeding sized females for this season be a good idea, or is it better to incest in some baby female morphs of some type.

For example, should I trade my 110g female pastel for two breedable normals? It seems like a good idea, but I'm not really sure and I need some advice. I know normals really aren't in much of a demand now, and even if I breed them with say a male spider or mojave I will still be "stuck" with half the babies being normals which may be a pain to sell at a price that is worth my while.

I would say just stick with what you have. Sounds like you have a great collection to start with. If you need to trade out males or females to bring it more blood, do so later on as a morph-for-morph trade. Just my suggestion.

I would not stock up on normal adult females. Instead, I would say get more Pastel, Cinn, Ghost, Spider, Pinstripe, etc. females.

Thanks for the advice you two. I'm gonna keep my little girl and raise her up.

I can't get any more snakes at the moment, no money. Won't be able to add anymore until I can get a job or sell some hatchlings.

Totally stick with trying to get morph girls. A breeder size morph female is worth her weight in gold. Lol. I have a pretty small collection and I already have to get rid of some of my breeder size normal girls.

Precisely why you should trade for two adult normal females. That's two clutches of eggs (if all goes well).
Sell some babies, buy some other snakes.

I would trade a 110g female pastel for two breeding sized normals...especially if they can breed this year. You have a pretty decent shot of getting at least one female pastel out of two female normals bred to the pastel male, and 110g isn't hard to achieve again...
Just my opinion.

I totally agree , normals may be normals but they sure come in handy if you want to make some codoms. I just set up 17 eggs this weekend from 2 "just normal girls" they were both bred to Mystic males so I kinda doubt I will be upset with 6-8 Mystics from a couple of mutts (as some folks like to call them) now will I? I also had a Het Albino girl (another fairly common one that people seem to be dumping these days) lay 10 eggs today, she was bred to a Pastel Yb 100% Het Albino . I doubt I'll be that upset when I slit that clutch that "just a Het" laid either! Babies from that clutch could come in handy considering I have Whirlwinds (Super Stripe makers) that are also Het for Albino already.

Normal breeder female adults are still not something I am in a big hurry to sell. I will likely be selling a few normal girls off, not because I don't have a use for them, but because I am about out of room . My way of looking at the normal adult girls is if they lay even only 1 good clutch for you every 3 years then you are still getting a solid return on your money, that is "if" you have the right males to breed to them (Supers, multigene males, even valuable single gene males) .

Plus sometimes having a normal is VERY valuable if your just looking for one trait or trying to prove something out without making the results uncertain.

Just my 2 cents.

Annnnnnnd...sometimes "normals" aren't as normal as you think.

I've read a few cases of people breeding their hets to females they bought as normals, only to be surprised when they hatched out Albinos or Xanthics. (I think it was Xanthics if I remember. He bought an import "normal" female, bred it to a het Xanthic, and got a few visual babies).

110g pastel female for two normal females what say anything over 1600 grams that has not been bred this year. Yea I think my one and only clutch of pastels is getting traded off . . . Like anthony said you will always want at least a few normals. ( I just had to attach my favorite normal lol)
