Snakes not eating...driving me crazy

merlin7676 May 31, 2009 10:40 PM

I am about at my wits ends with my snakes..they are refusing to eat..which I know can be normal but I'm starting to get very concerned about them. I've tried braining them, leaving them over night, in the tank, outside the tank, ect.
Snake #1-theyeri kingsnake-never been a strong feeder. will be 3 this summer. He was very small when I got him at 1 yo. the (breeder) said he was getting one pinky a week which I thought was too little. doesn't like to eat in winter..he's been brumated the last two. Last meal was nov 14th...4 fuzzie, 2 peach...haven't been using the lights b/c plenty of indirect light from room. temps 70 low end, 85 high end
Snake #2-striped cali-will be 2 this summer. 3 1/2 feet long. alway been a strong feeder..she is a glutton..will eat as much as I will give her. no burmation. Lat meal Mar 10th...a couple hoppers. temps same as above.
Snake #3-cornsnake-will be 3 this summer. Also a glutton..he did eat 1 hopper tonight.first meal in about a month..not very interested...3 1/2 feet long..thick around.temps same as above.
Any advice would be appreciated

Are they males? Maybe try scenting with lizard for the thayeri, wait out the corn, the cali should be eating. Try chicks, rat pups, something different, try LIVE. Live mice first, then rats, then chicks. Put someone elses' female in there with each respective species.

Sound like this one has almost been starved to death. I have posted here many times that most people don't feed their snakes large enough meals. Pinkies have hardly no nutrition (mostly made up of water).

When I start feeding baby kings I start most of them on pinkies and they are on hoppers in no time. Only a few get pinks (real small kings)for about 3-4 meals and then it is up to fuzzie size. How much you feed and snake in the beginning and the beginning GROWTH SPURT, determines how healthy the snake will be later in life

A couple questions:

1) how big are is the thayeri?

2) are all three females or is just the cal king a female?

Males go off food (though I doubt that is what is wrong with your thayeri) during this part of the season.

The thayeri is a male. He's not very large at all even after having him for two years. He is just over a foot long and has no weight to him even after the two years. As soon as I got him, I immediately increased his food to 3 pinkies every 5 days for 2 months and then switched him over to fuzzies.
The cali is a female..the corn I'm not sure. Was never sexed.

If he is a foot long he should take large fuzzies. That is the nutrition boost he needs to survive. After this long and eating pinkies is like giving a malnourished adult human powdered milk. Eventually your system will just give up and quit.

It sounds like he is on his way out and does not have the strength to survive and longer.

It is also possible they might be sick. Are they housed close to one another? They could have a parasite infection or URI.
