Feeding schedule for a Mother boa..?

Pithons Jun 01, 2009 12:04 AM

Would like to start up a discussion about what to feed a mother boa after giving birth. I had a 7 1/2ft - 8ft big girthy female give babies 12 days ago. She was a big girl before being gravid and over the months being gravid and after having babies she lost a sizeable amount of weight. Since her litter, this is what i fed her;
4 days after, 2 lg/xlg rats
6 days after, 1 lg/xlg rat
9 days after, 2 lg/xlg rats
11 days after, 1 lg/xlg rat

After 6 rats she barly has a small lump. She is now going into blue and will wait till she sheds before she gets another meal.
Im thinking of giving her a 6lb rabbit after she sheds. Not sure if I should be giving her such a lg meal or keep with the xlg rats every few days. What do you guys normally feed a big boa after giving birth.

This is all just opinion and my 2 cents.

If I have a female the size of yours I will feed them sparingly for the first couple of feedings, with plenty of fresh water. I do not feed them every few days but will feed once a week for three weeks to a month.

I then put them on their normal feeding program of every two weeks, all my females have low body fat and are all lean and muscular animals. I don't like to push them hard after giving birth because I think it is not good to have them with food digesting all the time, as their bodies have just been through a lot.

I have found that my females bounce back very quickly when the are lean and mean as opposed to the fat and healthy females I kept in the past. Boas are ambush feeders in the wild so they don't get the pampered care and steady supply of food that we the keepers offer them in captivity.

I try to use this as a guide for my feeding schedules, even though by Mother natures standards mine get fed way more than wild boas. Here in the hobby I think we get caught up in producing every year and trying to get back our investments, boas will breed for many years and their health is a direct factor in the size and health of their litters.

If my females are not ready for the next season then that is just the way it worked out and everything will be that much better for next season

There are a few schools of thought as to how often and how large a prey item should be offered, all the above are what I have found has worked best for my boas not what works for me.

Hows that for the opening request for a discussion LOL...

Be well.

Since my gravid girls only get half-sized meals, and nothing in the last month of gestation - their stomachs have shrunk. Their post-birth meal is still slightly smaller than normal (for the first couple of meals), and then they shed and then I start bumping up the size to regular meals every 10 days for a couple of months, then go back to every 2 weeks as usual. No need to rush them in getting their size back, it'll happen . My last girl to give birth was in mid April, and has only had her 4th meal since.
