Co2 Chamber

markru Jun 01, 2009 12:49 AM

Hi,

I want to make eventually a Co2 chamber. What size tank works well and what kind of regulator do I need? I want it to be safe but would like to stay on a budget. I know some links recommend a 20 pound tank and a welding regulator. What kind of a line will I run from the regulator to the box? Does anyone know a good place to buy from? Or experience with what I will need? Thanks so much...

Mark

The List;

-1 sweater box with lacking lid
-1 20 CO2 bottle
-1 CO2 regulator
-7 ft of 3/8 plastic tubing
-1 set of drill bits/or one stepped bit
-2 3/8 barb fitting (one that will screw into the regulator and one that can screw into a hole drilled into the sweater box)

The regulator must be for CO2 or if you purchase a reg kit you need to have the fitting for a CO2 bottle. CO2 bottles have differnt valve fittings than other bottles, a reg for oxygen won't fit. I regulate my output down to 8-10 PSI. You can buy them new for around $60 or $5 at a garage sale...

A 20pd CO2 bottle used weekly for 5 minutes into a 32 qt or larger tub will last 6-8 months. The gas is around $24 the lease on the bottle is $35 a year $75 for 5 years and $152 for 100 year. The lease is transferable....

one 4 gallon bucket
one 4 gallon bucket slightly bigger.....

mice into smaller size bucket
larger sized bucket placed onto/into smaller sized, all air blocked

lots of mice, almost 0 air....

few minutes...dead....no air, no CO2, no cost...fast as a chamber.......

.....works for me.....all you need is 2 buckets that fit into each other tightly......if loose...air will get in and they will never die.....

.................just my thoughts.......

and remember CO2 can kill you too.......

Mark, you can do this with a box with a moderately tight fitting lid (NOT sealed that would explode) and a perforated margarine tub filled with a small bit of dry ice. as it melts CO2 will be released and your critters will die quickly and humanely. Keep in mind that co2 is heavier than air so it will displace the air in the box. I am a biologist and we do an adapted version of this in the lab to whack our mice.
