treating gravid snakes with metronidazol

bladerunner8u Jun 01, 2009 01:02 PM

I treated my female Simus (Southern Hognose) a month ago for Giardia intestinalis
She responded great gained weight and ate perfect on FTF's and has been fine. I guess I should have treated again in 2 weeks because she seems like its back with the same symptoms. I keep her container clean so i must not have kill the cycle not treating in 2 weeks.
One problem she has mated in the last week.
If I treat her again will it hurt her becoming gravid or if she does get gravid?
I guess its best to treat her and save her but I was just wondering.
thanks for any help.

It has been shown that metronidazole rapidly crosses the placental barrier in mammals. Additionally, it has been advised that metronidazole not be used in humans during the first trimester due to clinical studies showing intrauterine deaths in mice when injected IP. It has also been recommended that it be used with caution during the second and third trimester in humans. However, no fetal toxicity or impairment to fertility has ever been observed in mice when metronidazole is administered orally. How this translates over to snakes is anyone’s guess.

If she just bred last week, your chances are probably fairly good that it won't cause any problems, but that is just a guess on my part. If it was a few weeks later and embryos were present, I would be more hesitant to use it. However, if the females condition is serious or deteriorating, I would not hesitate to dose her. Additionally, Trichomonads look much like Giardia and are not a serious problem. Have these flagellates been positively identified as Giardia?

Hi Kelli
Thanks for the reply.
Yes I had a fecal sample done.
She all of a sudden lost alot of weight and will not eat.
What I did wrong is not give the meds again in 2 weeks to kill the eggs I guess.
She was so healthy looking and gained weight and was eating great.
I gave her meds in some egg last night with a syringe and tube.
My were is if she becomes gravid and in 2 weeks I need to re-med her?
She was with the male and I hope he can't get it, I would assume it has a cycle and he would have to eat something with the egg in it.
This all happened when She ate a cuban tree frog that I should have never given her because see will eat FTF's.

I would retreat the female in a week after the first dosage. Giardia has a direct life cycle and does not need to go through a secondary host. The male could possibly come down with it if he ingested some cysts, most likely from a shared water bowl. It's unlikely but possible. Just watch him to see if he shows symptoms at some point. Giardia is uncommon in reptiles, and that is why I asked about the Trichomonads.

Thanks for helping.
The meds take care of the problem, but why did it come back?
what do you think she could have? All of a sudden she will not eat and looses tons of wieght.I only feed her FTF's now?
