Another enclosure thought

KellyWood23 Jun 01, 2009 02:42 PM

We are building a MIL apartement on the north side of our house. It will be 10' away from our house. Would it be a good idea to build the boxie pen inbetween the 2? They would have a structure on the north and south, but the west and east will be open. Thoughts?

Thanks

Kelly

I'd probably prefer to have some southern exposure due to the sun positioning. An East / West exposure would mean pretty late sun exposure in the spring and an early loss of sunlight in the fall. Ideally you pick a southern exposure for a habitat to ensure the longest part of the season.

Thats always my goal anyway

Dude! Where have you been?

Haha /wave.... I have taken a really long hiatus but I have been turtling and tortoising. Its been a few years. Glad to see you around Steph

Hmm....well that just sucks, doesn't it...LOL I guess I will have to stick with my original plan with the rabbit hole. It is out in the open but has a huge bush they can hide under.

Thanks,

Kelly

Kelly,

I would have to agree with rattay a south facing enclosure would sure be a much better environment for them.

How about if I extended the sides so the still had access to the north and south? Would that work?

That may be the cats meow as long as there was enough area for them to really be able to sun themselves for some extended periods. They may also use those areas for egg laying and hibernation.

It could work nicely. If you've been there long enough to see the annual solar pattern, you can judge. Box turtles will generally do fine. They don't really bask that much anyway but generally like to sit under filtered sunlight which is usually why its best to have a lot of sun exposure so they can choose when they get their UV.

Given how warm it gets where you are, it won't be a problem at all. Just preferable to have as much sun as possible on the property.

Its sad. I bought a house recently and I pretty much chose the lot based on space for the turtles and sun exposure. Call me hooked

There is nothing wrong with that at all...(big cheesy grin)

What is pathetic is I have 37 acres, but I still would like to put the enclosure next to the house. Go figure!
