Forget snakes on the plane...

zefdin Jun 01, 2009 10:13 PM

What about snakes in the will?

Has anyone thought what would happen to your snakes if something happened to you? I do not have my snakes in my will and I am not sure who I would leave them to anyway? My wife wants nothing to do with them with me here, nevermind if I am gone. She would probably call a local pet shop or the ASPCA or something? I dont even want to think about Petco selling my morphs with a ten gallon tank, a heat rock & some crickets for them to eat - yicks! Same thing with my brother and sisters & friends... I guess I could leave them to someone I know and like on a business level through the snake trade, but I really dont want to think about giving all my hard work and all this money I spent away to someone who will most likely turn around and sell them and make money that should go to my family off of them?

I dont know about you but I have snakes that are going to live 10, 20 even 30 years and I am not getting any younger? I am buying and hatching babies out every year and sooner or later they are gonna start to out live me.

Just like Monopoly, it all goes back in the box when the game is over.

I have also thought about that. I would say I would like my oldest son to take my snake business if he could be responsible enough to take care of them as a good business or maybe my younger brother who is mildly handicapped thinking he could keep up with them a bit at a time. All else fails what I would like to do and if I were you I would find someone on a business level or a good enough friendship that you would trust to liquidate the snakes for the best price they can get and make sure the money goes to your family or where ever you choose. Of course you would want someone who will be honest with your estate and I think it would be reasonable to offer to pay them somewhere between 10 and 25% to do the sale of them. Just an idea or two, Jay

Even though im young and have a very small collection you never know when you could go so what I've done is I have my collection priced out and saved on a flash drive. My "liquidator" and I have met in the middle on all the prices and we have set a low and high dollar amount that the collection should be sold for as there are 2 flash drives one for him and mine so my family has a copy. Even though this is a friend we have a contract (I will do the same for him with his collection if he meets his untimely demise) . . . . . Gee I hope were not on the same plane . .lol my family will get their monies and he gets his commission % which is set in the contract as well. Just don't forget to adjust you snakes values often so your animals are valued at what the market WILL pay........

This is something very topical in my life. I received a call this weekend from a gentleman looking to surrender several snakes that he does not even know what they are. From best guess it looks like I have 3 boas, 2 balls and a retic. But hey, he has no clue what they are and he is trying to care for them.

Several things I can suggest.
1. Keep an inventory and cages labeled properly. Forbidding that you die in a fiery crash tomorrow, your wife who wants nothing to do with the animals can be at least prepared to call someone for help. If there are animals of high value be sure that is noted somewhere.

2. Look at herper friends. Do you belong to a herp society? Is there someone who can assist your wife with them until the animals are gone?

3. Contact a reptile rescue and see if they can make a note that you are sending them animals in the event of your demise. Make a notation in your will and remember, rescues operate out of their own pocket. Include some amount of money to cover initial costs as well as caging.

4. Do you partner with any breeders? Ask if they would consider helping in the event of your demise.

You probably wouldn't have to think about much because you would be dead...

It's just a matter of making sure your animals and family are properly taken care of for the rest of their lives after your gone...

Sad subject but you gotta think about it sometimes..

What about donating them to a Zoo with a good reputation for Reptiles. Write out a contract which states that your Reptiles are not to be sold or traded away unless they are traded to another zoo for display or a breeding project. In a Zoo, thousands of people would get to enjoy seeing your Reptiles. You will live on thru your Reptiles.

I ran this by the wife a few months ago.I asked her if she knows what to do with them if something should happen to me and of course she said no.I told her she is to give the animals, cages and anything herp related even frozen rodents to(insert friends name here)
He is a very responsible keeper.
I also told(friends name here) that he is to contact the wife imediatly and take everything herp related that I own if I should cash in.
It's all planned out.

make sure you have a list of names and numbers and that your wife knows about what some stuff is worth,,,and tell her who to call when you go....

my wife knows there is alot of people to give snakes to....she also knows there are very few people who can take them all and give her a check for the total amount all at once....

......she knows who to call......

......oh....I'll email you my number .....HAAAAAAAA!!!!

.....(see, if I was being rude I would ask for a pic of the wives)....! ?

good luck, give her some $$$ sence ....
