what kind of snake?

lilhalo2003 Jun 02, 2009 04:14 AM

We got this snake from a friend that could not longer take care of it. I was told it is a garter snake, but it dose not look like any pic's I have seen. If it is a garter, I would like to know what kind it is. I know there are many different kinds. I would also like to know if anyone can tell me how old this snake may be, and if it is big enough to eat pinkie mice. It is about 11 inches long. We live in east Tennessee and this is were this snake was found. I don't know if that helps or not. Thanks

sorry I'll get this right soon I hope

Dekay snakes mostly feed on grubs and worms. They live in leaf litter and gardens, and thus do best with abundant hide opportunities. Might try a small pinky, but a grub would more likely appeal.

Worms are probably the easiest thing to feed it, but check out the Small Terrestrial Snakes forum for more care info for these guys. There are a few threads in there about keeping brown snakes on worms and slugs and even on scenting pinkies.

Cheers,
Billy

And since I don't think anyone else mentioned it, that's pretty close to full grown.
