Power went out...

RyanT Jun 02, 2009 11:53 PM

My electricity got knocked out for at least 6 hours today. Eggs would have gotten down to at least the low 80's or below. I think they'll probably be OK. I seem to remember the same thing happening last year, not for quite as long, but they were fine. Anyone have any reason to think I should expect otherwise? Thanks for taking the time to share any applicable anecdotes.

I wouldn't worry about it! Rodent burrows and termite mounds don't maintain 89.5 in the wild!

About a week ago I had a t-stat malfuction on my incubator... before I realized it, my eggs (balls, gtps, and carpet) were at 80 degreess for approx 48 hours. Probably still too early to tell if there was permanent damage done, but the eggs have been back to normal temps for about a week now and still look fine.

Mine went down to 79 degrees over a 4-5 hour period during a recent major storm and power out. The eggs all still look fine and I have even had a clutch hatch since that happened.

I think the previous poster is right on with the fact that these animals live in burrows and termite mounds and an 89 degree temp is not maintained there!

IMHO they will be fine, no worries..... but I will tell you that I am in the process of trying to find a UPS back up for my incubator. Just in case, a little insurance for the monsoon season if you will lol. But I am just that kinda person, too much hard work to leave it up to chance when im at work for 10 hours come home go to bed for 8 and find that the incubator tripped the gfci unit or some other natural act of . . . . well you get the point.

I tried an emergency backup unit on my incubator and it would not work. I use a Helix thermo on the incubator and when I have to hook it up to a generator during a power outage, the Helix goes bonkers! It constantly flashes error messages and temps, but it still seems to maintain the 89 degree temp regardless. I communicated with Helix about this and they said we might want to switch to a Ranco thermo unit!

If anyone has any advice regarding this situation, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Don't know about the helix, but we had power knocked out for 4 days. I know my temps got into the 70's before I got my generator. I'm running a herpstat. Everything worked fine and the eggs still look great so I'm hoping for the best. My theory is is that a real quick drop in temps would probably cause problems, but a gradual drop and rise like that should be okay. Just my thoughts though. Good luck with yours!

I have my room hooked up to a backup generator. For some reason, the DBS-1000's do not work on generator power. I use an old-school Helix Basic System for my incubator, which does work on generator power. Herpstats will also work.
