Butter corns

dave15run Jun 03, 2009 10:07 AM

I know that butter corns come from Amelanistic & Caramel. Essentially an albino Caramel. What would you get if a normal corn and a yellow rat snake were crossed? Just by looking at the butter it seems that this might work. I know that I run the risk of offended people who studied genetics and performed years of research but my curiosity has gotten the best of me.

P.S. I am not planning on doing this no matter what the answer.

I dont think you would get anything that looks like a butter striped corn. Striping in corns is a recessive trait they are born with if homozygous for the trait. On the other hand, yellow rats are born blotched and the striping developes over time as well as their full adult "yellow" coloration. You may get a lighter than normal corn that may develop some striping as it matures. But, I dont think it would be near as impressive as a butter corn would be in coloration, or as meticulously striped as a striped corn would be.

Just MHO!

I wouldn't think they would resemble the butters at all, if anything, they would be closer to a caramel than butter.

My GUESS is the result would produce a snake that has a really dirty brownish ground color, really dark brown blotches and may eventually develope linear striping to some degree but retain the dorsal blotches. I can not imagine this being an attractive snake.

Just my thought on what it would look like. Basically a really "dirty" looking snake.

Tada, I was pretty close huh. In the pic it looks very caramel like I think

that is exactly what I would imagine you would get if you mixed the two.
Thanks for the pic

I just can't believe how supportive the people on this forum are. I thought this was a really dumb question that may even get me in trouble. Sometimes I get these crazy ideas (because of my inexperience). Thanks for the picture and all the great help! I really need to get the corn snake genetics book. If I get crazy ideas at least they will be supported by a few facts.

No problem man.

I paired this fella up with a female Creamscicle this season going for a Corn X Yellow Rat X Emoryi het Amel cross (You guys can see where this project is headed) but the pairing doesn't seem to be working out. I'll try him with a different female Cream next year. One who is laying eggs right now as we speak. I could have bred him in '08 but he was passed up for other projects.

As far as temperment, he was more like a Yellow Rat when he was younger. As a baby, I would get repeatedly bitten every time I opened his enclosure but with some age he has really mellowed out and act just like a typical corn now. He's a heavy feeder and easy to handle and work with.

I bought him from a friend who bought him somewhere else. I was pretty early in the game when I first got this snake and never even asked who produced him. Now my friend doesn't recall. I have searched the net and haven't found anyone else who has any of these. He had to have clutchmates but, where are they??

It seems like I might be the only kid on the block who has one, or at the very least, one of the very few.

I'm not big into hybrids bit this one was really something different that I had to have. Originally I wasn't planning on breeding him, but he's really too cool of a snake not to breed. So I figured that I might as well get funky with it and see what happens. Possibly a new twist on Creamscicles with a bit of Yellow Rat blood thrown in? Won't know what the outcome will be unless I try it.
