All About Autumn (or: My Oldest Boa)

AbsoluteApril Jun 03, 2009 11:35 AM

I wanted to share a post about my first boa.

Autumn is 20 years old this year! This is her story (some pics at the end) -

She was born in 1989, purchased at a pet store as a baby by the original keeper. She suffered minor heat burns from an exposed light bulb and after 2 years was suddenly “getting too big” (we’ve all heard that before).

That person gave her to a lady in Venice, CA who took care of her for 7 years and named her Spot. However in 1998 the lady got a new puppy which would not leave the snake tank alone, jumping up at it constantly. Spot went off feed so the lady put her up for adoption (in the pennysaver).

I was living in SoCal and a few months prior had adopted my first snake, a corn, from a vet’s office as a ‘new adventure in pet keeping’. A friend knew I wanted a water dragon so he got me one, except it was an iguana (lol). My roommate and I shared custody of a ball python. I decided I really liked this reptile thing and got my very first boa: Spot! When I adopted her, the lady quizzed me, watched me remove her from the tank and handle her to make sure I knew what I doing. I re-named her Autumn because her tail saddle shapes and color remind me of dark autumn leaves.

Autumn has had a lot of adventures in my care; she has moved all over CA with me, even to Las Vegas and back. She taught me that I shouldn’t feed live, that some people get scared when you walk around outside with a large boa, that she can recognize certain people, that boas can learn and remember, that boas are very forgiving, that a locked cage doesn’t always mean it’s escape proof, that a feeding instinct will override tameness (ouch!), that boas don’t stop growing, and that there will always be more to learn and appreciate about these beautiful creatures.

She has been in my care for 11 years, is about 8' in length, had one litter in 2003 (34 babies) and is an overall terrific boa! Hopefully she’ll stick around for at least another 11 years.

I found these old photos from when I first got her in 1998, she was just over 5’ long and 9 yrs old:

Playing around outside in 2000:

Here she is following me in 2001. Every time I put her down, no matter where I went, she came right to me (I believe she associates me with safety).

Getting some exercise:

With the father of her babies:

Hiding after she escaped her locked enclosure, the brat!

And here she is today:

Thanks for reading!

Those are the pets that really enrich our lives.

We also have a 20 year old Bci. "She" has been through a lot. My husband bought her 20 years ago right out of high school. She was in his care for several years (about 7), then he moved away to college and his family cared for her for about 8 years. We met in grad school nearly 8 years ago, and when we bought a house finally picked her up and brought her home with us. During the time she was out of his care she had escaped and was found hiding in a planter in the back yard. Yes, his family kept her outside , and in a too small of a cage as well.

She's been with us for a little over 5 years now and is big and healthy. She's got a nice big cage and is our favorite snake. I call her a "her" because she's never been sexed. I think she's female because of her girthy quality, but we really don't care what sex she is. She was also never named, so we just call her "Boa".

She has taught us one lesson- don't give them a large enough bowl to soak in. She got a skin infection. A few of our snakes do try to cram themselves in a bowl occasionally, near their shed, but can't really soak. We use a room humidifier now.

Thanks for sharing!

I agree! That's great you have a 20 yr old too :D We really don't hear about older ones like this too often. Hopefully both of our 'old gals' will stick around quite a while longer.
Thank you for sharing!

I like the part where she follows you. Thanks for sharing!

AbsoluteApril Jun 04, 2009 02:53 PM

>>I like the part where she follows you.

I always like that story as well. I kept putting her down different spots in the backyard, I'd walk away so I could take pics and everytime I turned around she was following me. I thought it was just a fluke at first so I put her down in the same spot 4 times in a row and walked to a different area, each time she came to where I was. She also doesn't like to be held by most people and if I am next to said person, she'll work her way back over to me.

I wish I still had an outside area where I could take the boas. Oh well, one day soon I will again!
Thanks for the nice comment,
-April

You really don't see/hear about too many 20 year old boas. Just goes to show that you're doing a great job with her. I have some boas turning 10 years this summer (the very first boas that I acquired), and I hope that they stick around just as long as your Autumn has.

Thanks for sharing your story.

All the best,

Jay

Thanks Jay! I wish you the best with your boas too! 10 years is a great thing, they are in the prime of life.

Take care

Very nice story and pics! I have an older girl named Bubba, she's 15 now. When I got her I thought she was a male, lol. She's well over 8' now and I brought her up slowly. She's always been just a pet and has never successfully bred. I think she may be gravid now, we'll see.

Very cool Thomas! 15 is terrific and being such a big gal, Bubba is probably a good name (lol). Good luck with her!
