Pregnant Boa?

Novice_Charmer Jun 03, 2009 06:24 PM

If you had a Boa that you thought might be pregnant, but didn't know for sure, what would be the first step in trying to figure out for sure? I have a female here that has been gaining wait steadily as of late, despite the fact that she hasn't eaten in atleast a couple months. She has been climbing the back side of her cage trying to get her entire body up near her light,I'm assuming to get warmer. Her ambient cage temps are 82-87 with the spot under the light near 91, all verified by my infared temp gun.The past few days she has been in her hide box and doesn't even come out at night( actual body temp in the box in steady 86-87).I was just thinking today and remembered that back in late December or early January I had her shacked up with one of my males for a while because I broke the glass door out of her enclosure while I was cleaning it.I think they may have been together for as long as 2 weeks while I got new glass ordered.I don't even know what kind of gestation periods for Boas, do these time frames sound right, or close? I've had a shed out of her in the past month or so but can't remember exactly when.If I were actually trying to breed her,I would have been keeping closer records.I wasn't planing on any Boa babies,I actually have a incubator full of Burmese x Rock het albino eggs as we speak,so that was supposed to be my project.Long story short,if she is pregnant, I would like to help all I can to give them the best chance.Any other signs I could be looking for to help tell one way or the other?I'm attaching the best pic I could get of her just now.Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If they were together then there is certainly a possibility, the first pic looks like she is swollen in the right area

If she is temping out at 86 to 88 (off heat) there is a good chance she is gravid...my suggestion is to treat her like she is pregnant.

Also anytime you put opposite sex together take notes and observe.

Yeah, since my two "surprises" this year I have started documentation on everyone.Temps, sheds, food, refusing, deficating dates,days,amounts...all of it.I won't get caught of guard again. There is a guy that I know of locally that breeds Boas, any reason I shouldn't be picking her up to take her to him and get his opinion, or just best to leave her alone and see?

I try to keep my notes as simple as possible, only recording the events that really matter.

I would not move her for any reason as there are few people who can look at a boa and say for certain she is gravid....myself included

My suggestion is to provide her with a hot spot that will allow her to self regulate her body temps to 88 degrees for your particular cage and offer plenty of fresh water.
