co-dom / recessive Pastel Ghost

s6g2p Jun 03, 2009 10:44 PM

When trying to figure out a co-dom with a recessive gene or like a pastel ghost. Which square do you use the co-dom or recessive square to figure out pastel ghost / spider ghosts ect....

it doesn't matter. You just have to remember that the ghost gene has to show up twice for it to be visual. Genes are passed down in the same way, whether co-dom, dom or recessive. The phenotype is the only thing that's different.

When figuring out two traits you can't just use a 2 x 2 square, you have to use a 4 x 4 since there are more possible combinations of genes.

For example, a pastel het ghost can pass on the following genes. Pastel Ghost, Pastel normal, normal ghost, or normal normal.

Yes, setting up the Punnett square is based on the genotypes (heterozygous or homozygous) of the parents for each of the genes involved. The mutation type (recessive, co-dom, and dominant) only come into play when figuring out what the babies of each genotype look like. When people say there is no such thing as a het pastel they are just making it harder to figure out how to set up the square. All pastels are heterozygous for the pastel mutation and all super pastels are homozygous for it.

there's a lot of misinformation out there. Like the whole super pastel is dominant thing.
