Snake bags and info cards

euphuistical Jun 04, 2009 05:53 AM

Are specially designed snake bags worth it? They aren't that expensive, usually under $2 for a 8x12 one. If you just use pillow cases what thread count is good? I just picked up some 250 thread count ones. Is that low enough to ensure the snake won't suffocate? If I do get a snake bag what size is big enough for adult ball pythons? Adult RTBs?

Also, I just completed my rack and prior to this I just kept all my info (weight, feeding, shedding, all mating related stuff) in composition books. What exactly do you guys use, and in what kind of format? A large 9x5 note card placed to the side or under each tub? I think Ive seen some people keep them in plastic sleeves or something, not sure what that is. I just wanna know what works for people since I think record keeping is oft overlooked. Anyone comfortable with scanning a sample pic of their info cards?

I have never used specialty snake bags so I can't vouch for them. I have always (since I was a kid) used pillow cases. I just buy ones from the local Wal-Mart. They aren't very expensive, they last a long time, and I don't have to pay for shipping. Plus if I need to Wal-Mart is practically everywhere so I can always get snake bags if I need them.

As far as record keeping goes I just use an Excel spreadsheet. My collection is small (3 ball pythons, 2 corn snakes) at the moment. I have a spreadsheet for each snake. Each sheet is set up to record mostly sheding, weight and eating, but I'm still tweaking it and eventually I'll get around to adding things like humidity, temperature, and other stuff. The thing I like about the computer records are that it's super easy/quick to do, I can manipulate the data to create nifty graphs/charts (so you can potentially see correlations between temp/humidity and eating behavior for example), any time I need to add a new snake it's real easy to add another animal, and if someone needs a history on a snake (like the vet or someone buying the snake) you can print everything that snake has ever done for you and it's all right here!

snake bags are good....I buy them by the dozens, I use some and they disapear???? seems other people asking if I have any might be using them more than I.....so I bought a hundred.....LOL...cheap, they had a sale at Superior Enterprise...........check them out....watch for sales....as for size...you measure the size you want or need???....

as for cards...I just use 3 x 5 paper index cards....some of my snakes are 10 and MORE years old and have alot of cards...they are mostly there and can be a pain in a pile with or wothout a big paper clip on them (clips catch on shelves)(boxes WITH lids).........use what you want...3 x 5 , larger paper....computer (how could I type in food items for hundreds of snakes each week????NOPE)....some people use the bigger cards and have them printed with lines and spaces of what they want on them, then hang them in a plastic folder on the cage....

.....some people write nothing down, ever....

...good luck....

I do a mix of both. I just have 3/5 cards by all their cages, and type them up when I get some free time, (Or when I'm not being lazy). I just had them typed up (No paper copy) this winter and my computer crashed, so I lost all my info... So now I make sure I have a paper copy too.

I don't use a computer for records either, but a friend does. He can enter feedings for all by high lighting and entering them all at once. It seems kind of handy, but I use index cards.

can't highlight if they eat different every week, some don't eat some eat maybe one hop one week and 3 small fuzz another,...all depends on what's in the bucket at the time I get to that snake in the rack...LOL....

.......I write sheds and food items, I try to write what I breed what to......and I try to write on the eggs who laid them, but at times I have to recheck later who hatched from what....LOL...with balls it matters, with corns @ the price...who cares what it is...it's a corn....LOL

....good luck...

I have used both snake bags and pillow cases they both work fine depends on what is available to you. As far as record keeping I use the degei program by constrictors unlimited. I have used it for the last couple of years great program does everything you can think of or would need to keep records on. It can give you feeding charts and growth rates and also print out lable cards for your bins. I only have a small collection but find this much easier than paper records which I did previously. Just back up your data on another disk in case the worst happens and your comp crashes.

...yea...when my computer dies I throw it out and get a new one......this is why I haven't picked up a camera in years, all my pics were in the crased/dead computers so they are all gone....so why take new pics to lose?...LOL

sucks...I got 3 cameras and just got a digital camcorder (free/new)......I really should use them, learn to, and learn to save on disks??>......

Check out our free tracking cards available at the link. We have used them for years, they offer a pretty complete record of life events. Easy to fill in and follow.

And free. Downloaded by a few thousand keepers at this point...
