Will a Pet Cat Drive my Snakes Crazy???

MikeSkipRocks Jun 04, 2009 09:18 PM

I keep and breed Burms. My room-mate wants to get a pet cat. I told him that I didn't think it was a good idea. However I don't really know. Will my snakes become accustomed to the cat being their and them being able to smell it? I really don't want them to ever see the cat at all. I can't really say no tho, seeing as how he pays rent also and I have like 5 pets. Any thoughts or experience with the cats around snakes?

We had to cat sit for a couple of months here at or house. It was about a two to three month old kitten upon arriving. Yes the snakes were active and searching for a week or two, then they got used to it. The main thing I was concerned with was the fact that the kitten would climb all over everthing. Most of our snakes are in screen top enclosures for the time being. My main concern was the eight foot female burmese lunging up and tearing through the screen to get at the kitten, but it never happend. Since then I have built one cage on my own and am planning to build for the rest of our snakes. We have seventeen total, so it's going to take some time. The kitten made it back to my wife's son's girlfriend unscathed. I feel like it was mainly luck and a lazy well fed snake. What kind of burms do you breed? We are raising a four foot granite het albino a four foot granite albino and the eight foot normal albino, among the other various pythons and boas.

If the snakes are fed properly they'll most likely get used to seeing the cat from within their cages and live & let live. I say "most likely" because each snake has a different personality but for the most part that shouldn't be an issue.

I'm sure you've already thought of this but just in case: Take extra precautions when handling the snakes - like making sure you don't have cat scent on you and making sure the cat isn't in the room at the time.

Have a good one!

I have two cats, a dog, and my girls just got pet hamsters....among all the other reptiles living around here.

However, the cats were here first.

They don't really care to hang out around the big snake cages. They'll watch the smaller lizards (we call it cat TV) but are wary of that big snake cruising in his cage. Smart cats! Whenever the big snakes come out, all furry animals are put away. We also hand wash frequently and use hand sanitizer as HH suggested.

Funny you mention your cats and the lizards...

Our cat crashed right through the screen on our gecko cage one day and you wouldn't believe the sound coming from the gecko when the cat was in the cage, it was unbelievable...

We now have 3 dogs, one of which is about 9 pounds, so whenever the big snakes come out the dogs go in their crates just in case they accidently push in the door to the snake room..

We also wash our hands/arms every time before handling so we don't smell like dogs...

You can never really wash your hands too much IMO..

I dont feed my snakes cats so im not sure if they are familiar with the scent..lol.seriously though ive had large constrictors in the house with a cat for years and never had an issue.the cat always used to go bask in the warmth of my old snake room and they didnt seem to care of his presence at all but now i keep all of the snakes in a padlocked room in the basement as i have a 3 y.o. daughter running around that loves snakes too.

I have 5 cats amongst the plethora of reptiels, large and small.

I have never once had any issues. When it's cold, the cats tend to gravitate toward the warmest place...the snake cages. My burm and afrock both don't even care anymore. They just lay there and look at them. Nothing more, nothing less.
