RI update

mwrinkle Jun 05, 2009 11:40 AM

I took the animal to my usual vet, got in a day early from a cancled appointment. She examined the animal and beleved the RI moved from the Upper to Lower respitory tract. She described Piperacillin injectable. She declined Baytril since repeated injection of it usaully causes nodules to form subcutaneously on the limb where injected. She decided on a muscular injection vector since many reptiles have trouble absorbing antibiotics orally well. An injection is a more reliable means of adsoprtion and she demonstrated how to perform one with a diabetic gauge needle.
I am trying the yougurt suggestion for force feeding the animal. I found a plain yougurt with 21% protein and 4% fat at 05.cc which the animal accepted without regurgitation, thanks for the suggestion.

If you are giving dairy based yogurt, it could contribute to gi and resp. issues, but the soy yogurt is fine. Some rehabbers use the dairy based, but I use only soy yogurt with birds and lizards. I have used it on lizards with a variety of issues to a great effect. You can also switch to your acidoph. and the recovery formula once his tummy gets stable from the yogurt.

Please keep us posted!
