Sand for Geckos?

squeakywheels Jun 05, 2009 11:54 AM

I have an Albino Bell Enigma and we had been using just plain paper towel for his substrate. It was recommended to use fine sand for his substrate but since I put it in I noticed that when he walks through his water dish it collects in there. Can it hurt him? Is there something else I can use thats safe (and aesthetically pleasing)?

Ceramic Tile is generally viewed as the aesthetically pleasing "safe substrate" ....and it's easy to clean too.

Just make sure you get the unglossed kind.

Some sands can cause impaction....especially calcisands. That being said, I have used a sand for my leos for years. They have been with me since 1993 and are still going strong.

when we bred full time, we had around 1000 various geckos with a majority being leopards, We have always used "washed play sand" from home depot..have about thirty to date that have always been on sand with never a problem..problem with "calci sand" is it "invites" them to over ingest sand...But if a little sand was bad for geckos
