Made the switch - feeding on aspen?

geckobabies Jun 06, 2009 03:19 AM

Okay... so I switched our hognoses over to aspen bedding a few days ago. So far, it's worked out much better then newspaper to keep it less messy inside the cage and so I don't have to clean it every day! I spot clean it, but before the entire tub would need to be cleaned.

My question is, is it safe to feed on the aspen? I've done this twice so far and I have only seen a small piece stick to the rodent. Is this safe? Do you guys remove to feed?

Thank ya =)

Don't worry-it's perfectly safe to feed on aspen. I keep hundreds of snakes, and I'd be in BIG trouble if I had to move each one every time I fed it ...

I always remove from the bedding and feed in a plastic container with no paper or bedding. This prevents any chance of getting bedding in their mouth and keeps them from associating their living quarters with feeding. That way there is less chance of getting "hit" when you are not feeding.

I used to feed in their boxes on the aspen, until one of my breeder females got an aspen splinter embedded inside her mouth. Before I noticed, it had become infected and abscessed. Thanks to my herp vet (that made house calls) it was removed and with a 10 day course of antibiotics, she recovered fully. Now, all feeding is done in a clean, dry shoebox. No more splinters in the mouth for me.
