"No babies. Not a one..."

boaphile Jun 06, 2009 10:11 AM

"No babies. Not a one." Here is is June 6th and I have had one baby. I see all the great animals made by so many other breeders but I haven't seen a fresh still in the goo baby here since August 11, 2008. Nearly ten months ago! Plus that litter was a secret breeding so I couldn't show them off. That takes all the fun out of it you know. The last litter I could talk about was June 16, 2008. Now that was almost a full year ago. I am starting to feel a little bit anxious. I try not to look forward too much, as it makes time fly by to fast.

The "No babies. Not a one..." is a quote from my youngest daughter. One time I took her down to the big snake room to see if we had had any babies yet. We had not and when asked by her Mom if we had any babies she said those words; "No babies. Not a one...". She was three at the time and we have no idea where that "Not a one..." expression came from. She put us in stitches.

Still, I guess it won't be too long. First litter is due June 23rd. I can wait. Really I can... I think.

This has been a particularly tough year for us both hasn't it!? With all the unbelievable babies that it seems like everyone else has been producing and still we just wait and wait and wait almost wishing we were wrong about a due date so we'd find that unexpected litter next time we check. But it doesn't happen and still be wait and wait and wait... Misery loves company Al. The only thing I can do to make myself feel a little bit better is look at some of last years babies that I kept. That helps a little bit but there is nothing like fresh slimy baby Boa goo under the finger nails is there!?

Thats what I say every time I go and check on my only gravid girl (that is 30+ days over due) lol. If I havent learned more at least I've learned a couple things when dealing with boas. 1.They dont know how to read and 2. PATIENCE lots and lots of patience. Well good luck there and try not to wear a hole out in front of your cage (I already got to replace the carpet in front of mine)

boaphile Jun 06, 2009 10:52 AM

They can't read but you can read to them! You didn't think of that did you!? That will teach you. Next time read it to the female especially and then she will know what to do.

May you have tone of what you hope for and maybe a surprise or two! Good luck!

You too Jeff. I hope you get what your expecting plus more.
Its all a waiting game but for the most part it seems to pay off good luck looking forward to seeing some pics of those babies in goo around the 23rd of this month

cbmorphs Jun 06, 2009 11:25 AM

make up for it, after all your one of the eldest breeders in the biz!(not because of your age, but the length of time breeding boas)

I remember getting animals from you way way back in 95 or 96? It seems like such a long time ago, but in reality it's not... Time flies when your having fun, or just so stinking busy to really notice?

I know what you mean about July 23 and not being able to wait! It seems this hobby makes us look forward to much,(at least me any way) thus making time fly by because we can't wait till this snakes old enough or until this or that litters born! It's definitely a fun and rewarding hobby though... To bad these Boas can't grow up quicker!

I have a couple Boas that were due a while a go.. One of which was marked down for the 28th of last month the other was the 24th. I've been checking and checking and checking, but still nothing! I know there going to be viable litters just judging from there size and look alone... The wait has been driving me crazy... Both are breeding's were I used hets and I can't wait to see if they prove out!

Any way I'm sure we'll be seeing plenty of new baby pics soon enough!

patience is a virtue, ya right!

Nice story Jeff,

Chaz Neely

Come on, Jeff... haven't you had enough baby boas the past few years?? Besides, you have all these 'top secret' projects' to keep you busy, right? LOL.

boaphile Jun 06, 2009 03:51 PM

The "Top Secret" projects are really just for fun. Nothing that anyone else would care about. I just like to toss that in every once in a while. It's just a matter of time before somebody makes that Boa that's all white isn't it?

No wriggly goo for you!

So what was your secret litter anyway?

I've seen some T albinos in your photo album I believe but none on your available page?

Treeserpent Jun 06, 2009 04:03 PM

That was supposed to say T albinos but I seem to be illiterate today.

LCE Jun 06, 2009 08:20 PM

That's a cute story. Kids say some very special things if we just take the time to listen. Almost makes you want to have a few more children doesn't it? Well, maybe at this point boa babies will have to do.

Best of luck to you. (As if you need it.)---Kraig

AndrewPotts Jun 06, 2009 10:20 PM

I agree with you Jeff it's only a matter of time. The holy grail of holy grails of the Boa Constrictor world is just around the corner. I can feel it in my bones. I really do love the whole boa breeding thing, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Peace, love and may your season be fruitful. Take care. Andrew

boaphile Jun 07, 2009 03:28 PM

Yea. It's gonna happen and sooner rather than later. Someone who has kept some babies that nobody else would have kept, because he saw something he thought might be special, is going to squirt out that all white Boa (with black eyes. I guess blue eyes would be OK too.) and we all hope it's going to be us. If it's going to happen to whomever has done this the most times without something special to show for it, I am going to be a really happy boy. If not, it will probably be some kid out in fly over country that just has a single pair of animals that pops out a handful of Lucys and a mess of poss hets! Either way, it's going to be a beautiful thing.
