E. Hog Big Night Out

monklet Jun 06, 2009 01:58 PM

Only have one hoggie, a 2007 eastern, but I took some pics showing him taking a romp before feeding so I thought I might as well post.

When he gets hungry I put a bunch of misc stuff on the bed, including some stuff with mouse scent, and let him go. He'll just hang out there, crawling around very patiently. After an hour or so I put down some f/t mice and he gobbles 'em up. He's getting to know the routine and has become a really fun pet. Sometimes he even appears to "beg" for food!

It was sold to me as a male...tail looks right, but I'm no expert. He/she is growing pretty good, over three feet now and eats like a pig...could go four...me hopes. Not going to win any beauty contests but a very cool snake.

Those are great shots .

I've got a question for you. Is he on rodents strictly and if so, how hard was it to switch him over?

I was given an Eastern last September and brumated him for lack of toads that late in the season. Now that he's back up I'm wondering if I should switch him over or let him get his fill of toads this season and work on switchin' next year.

Hahaha, I'm not a real Hog farmer I got this guy as fully converted yearling and paid a premium. He was strongly patterned before I got him and has lost it gradually ever since. At one point his pattern/coloration strongly resembled a cottonmouth, including a yellowish tail tip (seen in young cottons).

The conversion was done by a hog lover who devoted lots of time...apparently it took lots of guts, as in toad guts Good luck with your'n

btw, thanks for the compliments.

That's a really good lookin' hog there!! They have always been one of my favorite natives! Unfortunately it's illegal to breed them in Va. Jeff
