lost and found? You decide...

golfdiva Jun 06, 2009 03:38 PM

Last September I lost a juvvie FEB turtle (though I hate like crazy to admit it! I was devastated!) Today my neighbor called me over because she found this boxie and knew I had lost one. Now we are trying to decide if it's the same turtle. I sure would like it to be, but the maid reason I think not is this: In Aug. the lost turtle weighed 250g, this one weighs 500g. Could a turtle double in size in that amount of time?

Any way here are the pics. The lost turtle first, then the found one. I would like opinions on whether or not they are the same turtle. Thanks!

I'm no expert, but I doubt it could double its weight in one spring. Plus, purely going off pictures, it doesn't look like the same turtle. The found turtle looks like it has quite a bit of pyramiding, unlike the turtle you lost, which would also lead me to believe it was a captive as well. Thoughts everyone else?

The one with obvious pyramidding is the lost girl, sorry I confused you. The one that was found seemed pretty tame. I handled her quite a bit and she didn't pee on me! There are wild ebt living in the area.

It may be possible to gain that much weight in the growth phase from Aug to June, but I don't think the markings would change that much, nor would the pyrimiding dissapear that fast or completely, also it looks like the hatchling has a classic developemental dip or indent between last and second to last vertebral scute on it's back end, and that does not look to be present on the found turtle and my personal experience is that is not something that changes over the years or completely rights itself the way it appears in the pics. Do you have any better pics of the lost turle?

They are NOT the same turtle.

golfdiva Jun 07, 2009 08:10 PM

The last two pictures are the lost turtle. They are the only pics I have of her.

I have to agree, they are not the same turtle. I have her soaking now and will return her to her place in a few minutes! I just wanted a second (and 3rd, 4th, etc.) opinion. Otherwise later I would start second guessing myself!

Thanks to all who replied!

Oh! I meant to add, this morning we found another girl around , crossing the street the corner from here! I helped her across the street. She was big and healthy looking! It's nice to know theres probably a decent population here!
