Hi everyone. First and most important I would like to apologize to a lot of my friends for not being around and having to "disappear" again... Yes, I'm in Afghanistan - AGAIN. My current location and the fact that I travel to different sites here in Afghanistan, plus my 84 hour work week really restricts my access to the internet, even when it is available... But doing this (Afghanistan) will allow me to eventually be at home PERMANENTLY and be financially well off, and invest MUCH more time in the hobby that we all love. As much as I hate to bring this up, my family must always come first - especially in this rocky-road economy we have these days. So yes, I'm overseas again.
But even with all this, I have by no means put the golden corn project aside:
Last year was a bad year due to the fact that the hets were JUST small enough to make poor breeders... Only the original female produced, but most of her eggs were infertile (only four out of 16 eggs hatched). This year is looking much better. I went home in April for a couple of weeks and paired up the hets that are big enough to breed. I have four females (the original momma and three older hets), that are gravid and due to lay eggs very soon (1-2 weeks). If some of you may remember, most of my hets are males. One of the older female hets is still having issues feeding even after three and a half years! So I could not breed her - she's barely over two feet long. All of her siblings are fat and three and a half feet long or larger...
I do have two actual young golden corns (06's) that are doing well, but still have some growing to do (a male and a female).
Hopefully this year I will have some baby golden corns hatch...
(Oh, and thanks, Jeff (Cochran),
Zee
