Chocolate Eggs?

ssnakes Jun 07, 2009 11:15 AM

This clutch of Albinos is due to hatch in one week. I have watched these eggs go bad...or so I think. But I have never seen eggs turn this "chocolate" color before. Anyone else ever seen eggs like this?

Three of the eggs are still good and I have my fingers crossed!

That's interesting...is that a small amount of mold on them? Can't tell from the pic.

There is mold on the one bad white egg and I know it is bad. The brown eggs started turning color in the third or fourth week of incubation. The color got progressively darker and at first I thought they were blackening. Hatch date is June 15th and they have that slight bad egg odor, but it is not overwhelming. They look moist on their surface. They are normal-sized eggs and even a little to the larger side of the scale. The chocolate eggs have held their shape perfectly, unlike the moldy white egg which has collapsed. I have never seen anything like this and it makes me wonder if anything is still alive inside. Guess I'll find out in a week or so. I'll let you know!

Thanks for all your thoughts-
Susan

wow.....I have never seen a chocolate ball egg before....I've seen green ones and yellow ones and fuzzy ones like you got...even blueish green yellow stinky ones...and dried out still white wrinkled ones....but man is that weird brown....

IF you hatch out chocolate amels....you are the first!

..............cut them someday and see/tell us what's inside...

I haven't seen eggs turn brown before. I'd definitely throw out the moldy one and separate the brown ones so they don't cause your good eggs to die.

Good luck.

Maybe it's just the camera angle, but the eggs sure seem awfully small for ball pythons that are due to hatch in 1 week. did you happen to weigh them when they were laid, has this color changed gradually, or did they turn brown in the first week? i've had some light brown colubrid eggs go on to hatch normal babies, but never seen an egg quite that dark. best of luck though!!

Not exactly that color, I guess when I have some that go bad I more or less equate them to looking like a potato with the skin on it.. Not nice, thats for sure but I have a clutch in the incubator right now that had 2 slugs(gone now), 3 potatos and 5 good eggs from a Spider to a normal. Hope the odds gods are with me and I dont end up with 5 normals after the 2 slugs and 3 potatos might have been my Spiders...lol.

Yeah, it is pretty strange!

Tonight I tried to move the eggs apart. I wanted to separate the brown eggs and the one covered in mold from the good eggs.

When I touched the brown egg, it adhered steadfastly to the other eggs and felt "sticky" to my fingers. The eggs will reach day #56 on June 15th and usually by this time eggs become unstuck and move apart easily. The shells actually thin out a bit too. But nothing seems to move here. Guess we will see something by early next week.....I'll let you know!
