Louisiana pine help please!!!

artist_095 Jun 07, 2009 08:57 PM

okay, so i am new to this site, and was told this was where to get help with breeding louisiana pines. so i have a few questions and i am open to advice, etc.

1. when do you start to brumate the LA pines? (september?)
2. when do you place the pair together? (february/march maybe?)
3. how do you incubate the eggs?
and finally is it right to have 6 inches of substrate, or should there be more?

hopefully, i can purchase a pair/trio in the near future, as i have been obsessing over this for awhile now!! just to let ya know, i have researched this species, so i DO know the basic care, i just want to make sure i know everything i possibly can before purchasing one!!

thank you!!

The problem you will find is:

1. Finding pure Ruthveni, if that is a perogative! There are plenty of hybrids out there that have been "cleaned".

2. If you aren't on a waiting list, you likely will not be able to obtain pure ones this year. Hopefully you have already solved this issue though

3. In regards to the breeding plan you suggest, I am not sure that the 6" of substrate is required, but I can't imagine it would hurt anything.

Brumation is just a temperature and duration issue, not a timing issue.

In regards to the breeding issues, maybe Ginter or someone else could provide more insight, I haven't succesfully produced eggs from these guys. I have confirmed breedings on several occasions but no viable eggs, so what do I know.

hmm... well i have been looking around the classifieds for one, but have yet to find a viable breeder, any suggestions?
how about Scott J. Michaels DVM? i dont know though, i have wanted some for awhile now, but parents have gotten mad every time the subject is brought up.
thanks for the info! me and my complicated self, UGH!!!

No suggestions from me, everytime I make suggestions on who I THINK has pure LA Pines, it gets me in trouble or at the very least, one or two more people taking me off thier Christmas card list.

In regards to Scott John, I am not sure who he is and I have not followed where he got his from. Used to there were a few definite breeders, but some of thos have dropped out of the hobby or at the least, the LA Pines. Used to you could say anyone with the Vandeventer line, but now so many buy that stock from a secondary source and then get questionable animals and mix the pot????

Try Terry, he does have pures and John Ginter has pure stock, outside of that I am not saying anything. I just know whaty I have and a few others.

haha thanks!! i completely understand. that is a gorgeous pine, is it yours? oh, and is there any way to tell if a LA pine is not pure? i mean, this may be impossible, but i dont know? i am kinda iffy about buying just any LA pine off of kingsnake, but i could just be judgemental.

Research research research is th eonly way to determine it and then it boils down to do you belive the breeder.

That pine now belongs to Andy Via I think. I only have a trio. I will not have any until bect year.

Good luck

The subject of true LA Pines is a tricky one as Daryl mentions, and has sparked many heated conversations over the years. The Vandeventer lines are true LA Pines and are the best known verified line. Here is one of my beasts.
