Size of a female for breeding.

Markru Jun 08, 2009 01:19 PM

Hi,

How many grams should a female weigh before breeding her? I am using grams because I use the same scale for my snakes. Right now I am breeding three girls who all weigh over 250 grams. What I would like to know is what the minimum weight in grams I could safely get away with breeding a female for the first time. I have three other girls that I want to rotate in that weigh just shy of 200 grams each. Is there anyone out there that can help me please share your experience or experiences with me.

Thanks,
Mark

13 wks and 200 grams.

I throw females in with males and leave them there till they cycle and are officially pregnant. Nature takes care of any problems, via mortality. Assuming she proper sustanance she will cycle and become pregnant when her body is ready. Same goes with the male, he won't breed till he can...

ATM I have some 13 week vigin females and some 13- week old vigin males awaiting some fresh blood litters.

Cheers

Hey,

Finally a breeder who will talk in grams....LOL. Most of the breeders I have talked to could not tell me a weight just that they can tell when she is ready. Kind of like the snake thing. Ask a snake breeder how to tell when a snake has follicles and is ready to breed. Hang on to your hat and be prepared for a lot of funny responses. Anyway, you have been so help full. I will post some baby pics when I get some pups. That will be around June 27th. I thought from what I was looking at that 200 grams would be the minimum weight but would most likely work.

Thanks,
Mark

I used grams as it was derived form the info I have from EU, I don't actually weigh my females. If I sold rats I would use grams, alas I do not.

I couldn't tell you when my females develop follicles either, I'm just not that experienced...

I do wish sometimes that the broad knowledge I have across a varied number of subjects could have been focused on a single task or subject. However I am just to attention deficit to pay attention long enough... Getting close to being old and haven't gone back to school because I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up....
