take your snake to a vet to get the proper dosage information. No Vet will give treatment info without examining the animal personally.

It is a human drug, the dosage is 20 mg per kg.You can do this yourself.

TerryHeuring Jun 08, 2009 04:29 PM

I am not a vet but have used fortaz.Dosage is 20 mg per kg every 3 days ,3 to 5 doses inject into the muscle on either side of the spine( be sure to angle in with the needle and not go strait down)It mixes with sterile water and if you freeze what you have left it is good for about 6 months frozen.Terrt

I used it on a gravid rainbow boa,it works very fast and I had no problems with her or her babies being born.Good Luck.Terry

Terry,

Arent you supposed to inject in the lower third (tail end) of the snake due to renal concerns I believe?

Yes

Where can you buy fortaz? I used it once when I got the shots from my vet but wouldn't mind having it around. And from what im told make sure the girl has plenty of water as fortaz dehydrates them a lot.

You will probably need your vet to get it for you.

Only into the muscle on either side of the spine, not into the body cavity.I would recomend an insulin syringe. Inject at an angle. Terry

Fortaz/Ceftazidime is a prescription drug, something you can only get from a doctor. And if you do find someone that is willing to sell it to you without a doctors okay, I WOULD NOT TRUST IT. You have no idea how its been stored, or what its been contaminated with, among other things. Not a good idea, in my eyes.

Snakes have a renal portal system where blood from the caudal (back) half of the animal is filtered through the kidneys before mixing with the systemic circulatory system. This is why it is recommended that injections be given to snakes in the cranial (first) third of the animals body. This way the medication is more completely mixed with the systemic circulation and the potential for toxicity to kidneys and other organs is reduced.
