I wonder if this will work?...

jlassiter Jun 08, 2009 10:34 PM

I work many months of the year away from home...before I got back home a few (4 or so) weeks ago I had my wife and one of my sons taking care of some yearling Holbrooki I have coming up......I had 2.2 adult thayeri from Larry Briggs as well and had hopes of possibly being able to produce at least one clutch from them....So, I had a good friend of mine take care of them and see if he could get them to breed for me.
The 2.2 got a short (8 week) cool down, but I doubt it was enough, at least for the males....(This was prior to the new snake room)...
Anyway....Both females did produce eggs, but both laid slugs last week and the week before....I kinda expected it, but hoped for better results.....

Now the new snake room is finished and the hibernation chamber for this winter is almost complete.....I will sure get a good brumation this winter.....(It is a tough thing to do in South Texas.....Todd-antelope can attest to that with me)

This is where I am going with all this rambling....lol

When I got home a few weeks ago I got 2.1 thayeri from Maria Heidkamp.....
I decided to start putting one of the 'brumated' males I got from Maria with the first female to lay slugs......Been feeding her alot lately too....
This is what I witnessed tonight....
I wonder if this will work....

I was wondering that myself John, I hadn't heard of anyone trying for the double with thayeri, but am willing to try with Walt and Mildred. or maybe throw in the stud, Fred. If I plump her up, he is probably good to go. She ate three small hoppers today, after laying one more slug this morning and shedding this afternoon. ???
Fingers crossed for that pairing John!

I know Thayeri will double clutch...My old Olive female laid two clutches one year with only one witnessed copulation prior to her first clutch.....Feeding heavily after brumation and after egg laying was the key....Some people frown upon double clutching, but I bet they do it in the wild on occassion, but who knows.....
I don't want to double clutch every female I ever breed....
I was just wondering since this female laid duds....was it her fault or the male's.....This male hooked up with her was brumated correctly.....in Alaska....lol
I bet there is no problems trying to reach brumation temps there.

WAY easier than the South Texas way...

Todd,
Here are a few shots....The left side drawer of every enclosure is the "dry-hide". The right side drawer is the "wet-hide". The Wet side is not wet it is moist and humid....It is amazing how much time each snake stays in there. I am beginning to think they absorb water more than they drink...lol
With both these hides I have had a perfect shed every time...Humidity is crucial to more things than just shedding. Feeding response is awesome...better than I have ever seen.
All the pooping is done in the dry hide....Easy clean up....
The 'wet-hide' doubles as a egg laying chamber as well....
All with thermostat controlled heat wire and adjustable timed lighting.....

Nope...I got 1.1 Definite Double Hets for Amel and White Wall as well as some females that are possible het for White Wall...Should produce a white wall next year if I get a pair close to 30 inches....

I'm with them, John. Great looking setup. Looks like your pair is doing what they need to do. I'll do a fertile egg dance for you. lol.
