Bad Eggs?

theguy67 Jun 09, 2009 09:17 AM

I have been getting a lot of fertile eggs that dont make. Out of approx. 2 dozen, only one has hatched. When I breed them I put one female in with my male, and leave them in there for a day, or until I see that the job is done. They only mate once or twice while she is in there. The females have plenty of calcuim, and I incubate the eggs at 83F. I don't think the male is a dud, cause he has made plenty of eggs in the past.
While incubating the eggs there are no sighns of deydration, or to much water. No mold or shrivled up eggs. Am I breeding them right? I have heard of "group breeding" I have tried it and had no success. Please help, I dont know what to do

If it is te first year of breeding for the females that could be it. Are they of proper breeding size 35-55 grams for normal size and 55-75 grams for giants. Make sure the calcium dish contains calcium with D3. The eggs can take up to 90 days to hatch so give them time. Even though the females can retain the sperm you should put the male with the female atleast once per month until the end of breeding season this helps with better fertilety of the sperm. Hope this helps

This is their second year, I have calcium, but I lost my D3, could the fact that they have not had D3 in a while cause it?

Yes because they need the D3 so they can absorb the calcium with out d3 they are not absorbing the calcium. I would get some calcium with d3 asap and put a dish of it in their enclosure and dust their food with it for a week then just dust their food with it once a week and use vitamin powder the other times.
