Second clutch chances?

jlassiter Jun 09, 2009 05:11 PM

I have a female thayeri that laid a clutch of infertile eggs (slugs) last week...I thought since she produced follicles & eggs it was the male's fault for not making them viable so I tried another male on her and saw multiple 'hook-ups'.

What are the chances of having a 'good' second clutch?

Has anyone ever had a female lay slugs on her first clutch then produce viable eggs on her second clutch?

I've had it happen with Mex Mex. First clutch no good second clutch had 6 out of 10 good. The next year she layed 13 good ones with no second clutch. This year it looks like its going to be slugs again. She just had her pre-lay shed and is not lookin to beefy. She was bred to the same male every time. I could not even guess what causes it.

Thanks Karl...at least I know that a female can lay slugs then viable eggs in one season....
I think the problem you MAY be encountering is the 'window of opportunity'.
Do you keep the pair together during brumation and breeding season or do you re introduce the pair on and off?
