What type of sand would be best to prevent impaction, and if using a "safe sand", would it still be ok?

What type of sand would be best to prevent impaction, and if using a "safe sand", would it still be ok?
I wouldnt recommend sand period. I moved my geckos onto sand for a couple weeks and all they did was eat it... none became impacted as far as i know, but all of their feces were just about completely sand. needless to say they are back on newspaper and paper towels...
