Hibernation-best way?

exreptile Jun 10, 2009 10:33 AM

I moved from Florida to Alabama in November '08, to take care of my father, who had cancer. I brought my eastern box turtles with me. Some are from here originally. I have to ask, what is the best bedding to use for hibernation? And do I take them off of feeding like I do my Russian tortoises, or do they naturally stop eating themselves? I've got a while before winter comes, but since moving here, between work and trying to expand tortoise pens, I have time to get online maybe two or three times a month, so I figured I'd post today.
Thanks,
Cliff

Cliff,

This past fall I hibernated my three box turtles in their night pen. I added about two or three inches of finished compost and hardwood mulch mixed with leaves, then when they all had dug down, I covered them with about four to six inches of oak leaves. This worked great. No one came up until they were supposed to and all three came out with even better coloring than the previous season.

I've found practically everyone on here has a different way of bedding down their boxies and no one way is better, you just need to find the way that works best for you and your circumstances. Anyway, enjoy the season; we've got awhile until hibernation comes!
