Hey everybody,

I have some pictures here of my wife's box turtles. We have had some mixed report on what sex they all are so I would like your opinions.

Thanks,
David

Turtle #3 is Babbs. Babbs is still young so sex might not be possible to determine yet.

The tails of male box turtles will have the cloaca positioned further down the tail located beyond the edge of the plastron and sometimes even beyond the carapace too. That being said, both #1 and #2 are males. #3 also looks like a male but I'm not too sure at what age they can be accurately be sexed.

I have heard from different sources over the years that 3-Toeds were difficult to sex.

Multiple views of each, showing rear feet/claws, plastron concavity as well as tail would help.

Sometimes you really have to look at all these things in aggregate to reach a solid conclusion.

I have an Eastern here that was a challenge for me because it was quite large, but not fully mature when I acquired it. It's eyes were reddish brown, plastron was only slightly concave, tail and rear claws didn't tell me anything, skin was not colorful, etc.,etc....I only determined for sure that it was a male when it fanned its penis.
