Egg laying

norristhenut Jun 12, 2009 07:04 AM

I recently made ran across a fellow in my area with quite a box turtle compound. It is a very large well maintained area with about 7 or 8 turtles, 3 male and 5 females. He says every year on June 12th his females will lay their eggs around 6:30 to 8 pm since he’s had them about 12 years. He states that on occasion a few will linger a few days but always starts on the 12th. He insists or believes all box turtles due. I would welcome some feedback in regards to other member’s experiences hear at the Box Turtle Forum.
That being said, last night on my way home in a heavy rain I came upon a box turtle in traffic running all over the road with people avoiding it I almost created an accident in u turning and grabbing it up from the middle of the highway. When I got home and examined the turtle it appears it is a female ands was
Injured, possibly a glancing blow from a car tire she had abrasions and a little cut shell but for the most part looked very good and remained closed till this morning. Today she looks good and has her head and legs out with beautiful markings, color and shape. She’s gorgeous.
Here’s the biggie, today is June 12th should I keep an eye on her in regards to laying eggs.
Thank you in advance for info.

The females here do NOT lay their eggs on the same day each year. I've been keeping records for some time now. To give you an example, one particular female has nested on 5/25, 5/30, 6/4, 6/5, 6/7, 6/10.

She may well have been on her way to nest. If she isn't hurt, I would release her back where you found her so that she can do what she needs to do.

Thank you for the response; upon closer examination she has more injuries than I thought. Her shell has a bigger crack and her right front leg is missing all the (toenails?). Also some raw/pink areas on a leg and most look like they will heal or adjust in time. As for taking her back to where I found her it is a new sub division development so I’m guessing she was lost and her home destroyed. I’ll probably keep her for a while as I have a nice outdoor compound with 2 males and 1 female ornate and they all get along ok.
