...have observed a Gray-banded Kingsnake on the surface?

Checking my notes, I usually see alterna at temperatures below 85 °F......the highest was 88 °F. Is this similar to other people's observations? Just curious....thanks for taking the time to answer this question....gmerker

I found an early evening RR animal many years ago at 101 degrees. But to be fair, that is a big exception to anything else I have seen... and you have to give or take a few degrees for the thermometer I had at the time.

But at any rate it was still hot out...

Gerry,
I have not found any myself above 90 degrees but I think Dan Johnson and Chris Sheldon found alterna on Black Gap the same evening in early July 93 or 94 when the afternoon temp reached 111 and was still in the mid to upper 90's wen they found theirs. Dan's was out walking though, Chris' was on the road or shoulder.
Mike Forstner found a big hill river road and he told me it was still in the upper 90's around midnite when he found it. These are all air temps however not surface temps. I always felt when it was too hot to wear a t shirt at night it was too hot for alterna but thats just me. Heard it was 109 in Lajitas yesterday. Good Luck. BA

Merk,
The female Radio Tower I walked in (04) was stretched out basking on a small cut and it was 92 or 93 with zero wind.It was the only alterna found in about 10 days there that year.

p.s. she is in her nest box as we speak for the first time also.

Gerold,

My son Ryan and I caught two alternas - one on Juno Road (AOR)in 2004 at 9:05 pm and the other just east of Langtry on a cut in 1998 at 9:00 pm - when the air temps were 90 . I remember hitting the road on Juno with a temp gauge at the spot where we found the Juno animal. It registered 95 degrees. I hope this helps.

Gerold,
My dad and Bob Assetto found an alterna in the mid-70s on hwy 90 east of langtry at about 7pm with the sun way up in the sky and the air temp well over 100. It was back when Hwy 90 had a gravel shoulder and it was layin on it. I am sure that the gravel was scorching hot.
