Eastern Milk Snake Question, Please Look

timmah Jun 12, 2009 03:33 PM

I got a new wild caught eastern milk snake, I have him in aspen substrate and large water bowl with a few hide spots. I use cobra mat under tank heater with rheostat to keep control of heat. Do I need to worry about anything else? The natural humidity in my basement is around 60% or so, and the snake is feeding on pinkies, 3 a week, dusted with Rep-Cal Phosphorus free calc. with vit.D mixed with Rep-Cal herptivite w/beta carotene multivitamins.

Any other comments or suggestions welcome.

Thanks

with any milk snake there is two main concerns, eating and keeping it from eacaping. The store bought screen tank tops are a great way to lose a snake. If its eating pinks your doing great just get a good emclosure and top.

My suggestion ... Make sure the tank is escape proof. These guys are escape artists.

Funny you say that, when I first got him he escaped the same night.
3 weeks later i found him basking on top of my Savannah monitor cage and my monitor is going nuts trying to chew him up.

He cannot escape now, hes on lock down :P

I was very surprised a wild caught milk eats so well, easily 3 pinks a weeks with ease. Has even had a nice clean shed.

i see their size is from 28" to 51" i hope hes more towards the 51" range because i like bigger sized snakes.

Don't get your hopes up for that 51" mark!! An eastern milk in the 32-36 inch range is a good size adult. I have never seen one bigger then 38" inches but I am sure some guys on here have. 51" is probably the RECORD length and is certainly not the norm.

Nothing beats good genes! Here is a nice size one!

...if it's as big as I think , you might want to feed it every 4 days to keep it growing better.....make sure the heat mat doesn't dry it out....aspen and heaters can dry out anything...give it a moist hide even,,,....and as mentioned twice....they get out of everything.....
