semi OT king question

Anyone know ??

Are their any OTHER concerns with dog food as rodent feed besides RED DYE ?

I’ve met lots of people who feed their rodents exclusively dog food, and the rodents, breed well and live long lives.

The question becomes if feeding them to reptiles long term presents health problems or risks.

I’ve exclusively mazurri for 10 plus years, but the price hikes are tempting me to go to a 25% mazzuri, 75% dog food mix.

Thanks,
Jeff

I don't think there is a shred of proof that mice fed on dog food will not live as long in captivity.

The only thing I'll say is that the dog food can be more "moist" or "greasy" depending on the type you use. In one case with me, I did just what you are pondering...I mixed them up. The canine food I used was not compatabile w/ the Mazuri in that it got the Mazuri wet and it then began to grow a fungus or something. I think you're in FL so you also know how humid it is..
So...just watch the feed close and I think you'll be fine.
With Mazuri and others at about 30 cents a pound, is there dog food available in your area that is cheaper?

I have used nothing but cheap dog food from Smart and Final for 25 years now.
I have always thought its a waste of good money to buy expensive rodent blocks.Thats just my .02cents and I have no proof either way.

Appreciate everybody’s feedback

I’ve went back and forth on this philosophically for years.

On one hand, if you listen to the reps for the Harlan, mazzuri, Ziegler etc., or anyone affiliated with a zoo or lab. They insist it’s a no brainer.

On the other lots of people run rodent colonies and herp collections for decades on pig/dog feed and report no problems. They may also use a herp supplement added to the prey.

I wish their was research done on the blood work of older herps raised on both methods.
