Not hungry???

fyrpix Jun 13, 2009 11:50 PM

My rainbow hasn't eaten in almost 3 months. He's shed twice in that time. The second just about 4 days ago. He looks great but He still won't eat. Do I just wait him out? He normaly eats thawed, frozen. When he dosn't eat them I just toss them. This is getting expensive!

BRB?

First thing no matter what species is to check your husbandry, temps, humidity etc.

Anything change?

Age of animal?

Others in the vicinity either breeding or possibly ready to breed?

They can go months (and months) without eating but not usually without a reason.

Dave, thanks for answering. This Forum has been a big help for me in the past.
Nothing has changed for my rainbow. the temp and humidity is good and stays constant. When I get him out he is very docile and in the 3 years I've had him he has yet to bite me.
He looks very healthy. Good color and no weight loss. I wasn't TOO worried but this is the longest he has gone without eating.

so, Male, three years old (assuming you got him as a baby?), not eating for the last two months (my prime breeding season)....

Has he been overly active, on the prowl? And is there another female around?

Even if not, could simply be he's ready to breed.

Have you found any sperm plug / hemipenal sheds? Looks something like this in a water bowl.....

You can see kinda how it looks not in water up the side of the bowl.
